Larry Larson Planning a Return to HOT ROD Drag Week in 2018

HOT ROD Drag Week 2017 had its fair share of excitement as competitors battled it out for the quickest average e.t. over the week-long event, but a lot of the big names we’ve come to look for simply weren’t in contention. With Jeff Lutz only making exhibition passes and Tom Bailey breaking on just the second day of competition, that really left only Dave Schroeder and Joe Barry in the running to take top honors. Next year however, the slim field of ludicrously fast street cars may be a little bit bigger as Drag Week legend Larry Larson plans a return trip for 2018.

Larson has been absent for the past few years of the event, but those who have followed Drag Week since the beginning know how vast his accomplishments in competition have been. Not only was he the first guy to run in the sixes and break the 200mph mark at our event, Larson also won the thing five years in a row! He has pushed the limits of what a street car can do while finishing every Drag Week he has entered.

We called Larry to ask why he’s decided next year is the time to reappear on the Drag Week scene, and he said simply because nobody has laid down a 5-second pass and he thinks he can make that happen in his street-legal S-10 Pro Mod. We know getting down into the fives in a vehicle that you’re driving from track-to-track isn’t easy, and the conditions have to be just right to make it happen, but if anyone can make it happen, it’s Larry, and he assured us he would do everything in his power to make it happen.

As of right now, only Larson and Lutz have been able to dip into the fives with their street legal drag cars, but neither of them has managed to do so at a Drag Week event. We think it’s safe to say that if Larson does indeed make his return to Drag Week in 2018 that we will be in store for a slug fest as they push their cars to the limit in an attempt to beat out the competition and acquire that elusive five second time slip.

Check out all the details about Larson’s Pro Mod S10 here.

Larson debuted his pro mod S-10 in 2014 for HOT ROD Drag Week with a 620 cubic-inch big block Chevy and twin 98mm turbos under the composite front end, and even though he didn’t win the event, he did manage to lay down a 6.16 second pass during the Heads-Up Challenge that year.
Larry has gathered an impressive list of accomplishments while piloting his 1998 S-10, even securing a Wally when he won Top Sportsman at the 2015 NHRA Kansas Nationals in the truck.
Despite winning HOT ROD Drag Week five consecutive times in his 1966 Chevy II, Larson has yet to secure an unlimited class victory in the Pro Mod S-10 he built and we’re interested to see if he can change that fact at next year’s event!
