Freaks of Drag Week: The Trollvo

We have a secret affinity for these boxy Volvo’s of the ‘80s and ‘90s and would love to build one similar to this one: Billy Sijthoff’s 1984 Volvo 240. In place of the stock four-banger is a 5.3 LS out of a 2001 Suburban. It’s backed by a 4L80E transmission feeding a Ford 8.8 rear axle. A Borg Warner S475 turbocharger puts this thing into the 10’s by stuffing 20 pounds of boost into the engine. “I built the car for about $10,000, and I have more fun in it than my race car,” Billy explained. Drag Week wasn’t without problems for the Houston native. He had planned on installing a new set of axles before the start of competition, but Fed Ex was unable to deliver them because of the hurricane. He went so far as to drive to the distribution center in Dallas, but to no avail. Strange Engineering saved the day by custom making a set, which he installed in the hotel parking lot after finishing Day 1’s drive. We saw him changing a fuel pump three nights later, again at the hotel. He finished the event in spite of the setbacks, running mid-10’s in the Street Race Small Block Power Adder class.
