HOT ROD Drag Week, presented by Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive
Jay Brown’s 1,000hp, SOHC-powered 1969 Mustang is at the top of the Modified Naturally Aspirated class with an 8.949-second average at 150mph. Jay built the 585ci SOHC engine himself and is aware that the oiling for the rocker arms are a weak link, so he tries to keep an ear out for a failed lifter before it hurts the cam. Unfortunately, two lifters failed some time on the drive to US 131 Motorsports Park and took two lobes out with them. Of course it happened to be one lobe on each cam. A rain delay afforded Jay Brown and his copilot Steve Peasley an extra hour to wrench and it didn’t take much longer than that to get both new cams installed.
