This month’s cover theme goes way old-school and is dedicated to those hot rodders who hew to the four-cylinder path to making power.

Our cover car is a ’31 Model A roadster out of the Pacific Northwest that raced all over the Oregon and Washington area before heading south to hit the beach at The Race of Gentlemen. Then it was shined up for an appearance at the Grand National Roadster Show’s Suede Palace. Yes, it’s a cliché to describe a car as built for “show and go,” but Cedric Meeks’ roadster is the very embodiment of that phrase.

Another Model A in our cover section was also at GNRS, but in a totally different circumstance. Stoker’s Hot Rod Factory built the stunning black Muroc Roadster for Bill Grant to be a contender for the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster trophy. You won’t believe the workmanship that went into this banger A-bone.

We also have a story about a hot rodder who built his own nitro-burning four-cylinder engine from scratch, as well as the dragster around it. The story of how this car was found and restored is incredible.

This issue marks the kick-off of our Racing Roadster project, a Model A under construction at Throttle Jockey Originals in New York to eventually run at TROG in New Jersey. In this edition, we build the engine; stay tuned for the car’s chassis build, body mods, and other tasks to complete on the way to the Jersey shore.

Also in this issue: Our Power Struggles archival feature looks at racing highlights from 1965; we have a feature on the early hot rodding history of Jim Davis (former president of B&M); and a historical look at Fuel Altered pioneer Leon Fitzgerald, who built and raced the Pure Heaven drag car. All this and more will be in the July 2017 issue of Hot Rod Deluxe, on sale May 19.
