When the editors of Street Rodder magazine suggested to John Buck the Pomona Fairplex was the ideal venue for an outside show in conjunction with the 68th Annual O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Grand National Roadster Show presented by Meguiar’s Premium Auto Care Products he wholeheartedly agreed. While no one was sure how the Grand Daddy Drive-In would be received here we are 12 years later and everyone agrees that this event has made the best show in the country even better.
On Saturday over 650 cars and trucks filled the spaces between the buildings, and while Sunday’s attendance was down by comparison, the quality of those in attendance was just a remarkable.
Street Rodder presented two awards on Sunday. The recipients were Jim Siegmund for his 1932 Ford. Covered in 1941 Ford Florentine Blue, the five-window’s top has been chopped 3-inches up front and 2-1/2 in the rear. Power from a 401 Buick is delivered through a Turbo 400 with a switch-pitch converter to Halibrand Culver City quick change.
Our second award was given to Marty Fisher for his 1949 Chevrolet “tin woodie” station wagon. The two tone gold and silver finish was complimented by the faux wood paneling. Inside the stock front seat was replaced by a pair of buckets separated by a custom console. Under the hood is a small-block Chevy topped by a Ram Jet fuel injection system.
Along with the outside show there was a selection of vendors offering everything from car parts to clothing, classic music CD’s to custom painted T-shirts. And of course if you were looking for the editorial staff there was plenty of food booths to checkout.
There’s no question the Grand Daddy Drive In is a bargain for participants as they get to park on the grounds, entry to the Grand National Roadster Show and discounted admission to the Wally Park’s NHRA Motorsports Museum. In our book that makes it a win, win, win situation.
